Margin of Safety Calculator and Sticker Price Evaluator

Use this calculator to determine the on sale buy price of your company.

How to Use This Calculator

The Rule #1 Margin of Safety Calculator is your go-to tool for value investing. It uses the Future Growth Rate (FGR) and Earnings Per Share (EPS) to estimate the sticker price per share. This is also called the fair value or intrinsic value of a business.

The calculator then shows you the Margin of Safety (MOS) price. That's the price where a Rule #1 investor believes they can buy safely. You get a built-in cushion to help protect against potential losses and investment risk.

Think of the margin of safety as a simple way to make sure you're not overpaying. It mitigates your financial risk and helps even if the market price or estimated intrinsic value changes.

To get started, you'll need:

  • Current EPS (Earnings Per Share)
  • Future Growth Rate (%)
  • Future PE (Price-to-Earnings Ratio)
  • Minimum Acceptable Rate of Return (%)
  • Number of Years

The calculator will then show you:

  • Future EPS
  • Future Value
  • Sticker Price (fair value)
  • Margin of Safety (safety margin)

Use analyst estimates or historical rate

Quick Example

When entering the Estimated EPS Growth Rate, remember to choose the lower of either the historical Growth Rate or the Analysts' Earnings Estimate, but never over 15%.

The Importance of Margin of Safety for Investors

What Is the Margin of Safety?

No one wants to lose money. That's where the margin of safety comes in.

This isn't a fancy accounting or investing term. It's a practical safety formula that helps you buy into a business at a discount. Usually, this means 50% off the sticker price or fair value.

Why? The best investors, like Benjamin Graham, know the market can be unpredictable. A little extra cushion never hurts.

By setting a safety margin before you buy, you build in a buffer against "what if" moments. These could be a sudden dip in stock price or a surprise drop in the company's sales or revenue. This is a way of understanding margin and risk. You avoid poor decisions when emotions run high. The margin of safety percentage gives you a clear goal.

Sometimes you see a company and think, "This is the one!" But even with a more profitable product mix or high margin, it pays to be cautious. The margin of safety formula is your shield against potential losses. It's how you aim for a good margin and an ideal margin in your investments.

The Margin of Safety Formula

Here's how the safety calculation works. Take it step by step.

Find the Sticker Price (Intrinsic Value)

Use the future growth rate, future P/E ratio, and your minimum acceptable rate of return. The future growth rate is always an estimate. Nobody has a crystal ball. You can find the other numbers on financial statements. Use the calculator above to crunch the data.

Calculate Margin of Safety

Take that sticker price and cut it in half. That's your margin of safety price. This is the point where you can feel comfortable buying. You know you have a solid safety percentage built in. You can even calculate the margin based on your own assumptions.

For example: Let's say you calculate a sticker price of $80 per share. You'd look for a margin of safety at $40. If the current market price or selling price is higher, don't stress. Just add the company to your watchlist.

Keep an eye on the quarterly and annual results of the company. No company is immune from an event occurring that causes fear and uncertainty about the short term future of the business. Just because the company is over priced today, doesn't mean that Mr. Market will not give you a buying opportunity at your MOS price in the future! Patience is key in value investing.

Why Does the Margin of Safety (MOS) Matter?

Understanding your margin of safety helps you avoid investing at a price point that's too high. This is important when the market value or stock price is highly subjective. It's a financial metric that gives you confidence.

Focus on Margin of Safety percentage and research. This keeps you from falling for hype or making decisions based on emotion. Instead, you're using a proven safety formula. This guides your investing activities. It helps you target a good margin of safety and avoid the irrational exuberance seen by Mr. Market pricing companies at extremely high valuations. The MOS calculator helps you set a price target based on your investment risk.

The margin of safety percentage is a key metric. It shows the difference between your calculated fair value and your buy price. This difference protects you from market swings and unexpected changes in current sales or revenue.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the MOS Calculator?

Our calculator uses standard FV and PV calculations that are reproducible in excel.

Where can I find reliable EPS data?

Annual reports, SEC filings, and trusted finance sites provide EPS figures from the Income Statement filings.

How can I calculate a Future Growth Rate (FGR)?

Determining a FGR for the purposes of valuing a business is a task that by definition cannot be precise. You do not have a crystal ball, and thus cannot predict the future with precision. You can look to the past and analyze the Big 5 Growth Rate numbers to determine how the company has grown in the past. With this knowledge you can apply what you currently understand about the business to assess a reasonable growth rate based on these past results into the future. Compound interest is said to be the 8th wonder of the world ~ Albert Einstein. It's imperative that we are conservative in our estimations of future growth.

What is the Future PE and how do I calculate it?

The Future PE is an estimated price-to-earnings ratio the market will likely apply to the company's shares 10 years from now. Multiplied by the future EPS you've calculated, it gives you an estimated future share price. As a rule of thumb, Future PE can be estimated as two times the future EPS growth rate — but only if the company's historical PE ratios support the market actually being willing to pay that multiple.

Can I use this MOS calculator for international companies?

Absolutely. It's possible that on different exchanges around the world, the PE ratios will not follow the standard 2 x FGR rule we apply in the USA based markets. As such, you must always do your due diligence and make sure that the inputs to the calculator are representative of reality and what the market you are looking at is likely to pay.
